about

The Serene one is back for the spring with a whiff of poplar and gradient shades of dusk in audio form. A particularly relaxed project, perhaps more so than usual we find the author musing on the completion of this work on the intro track ‘Do It Again’. ‘Elevated Microphone’ seems to harken back to the late 90s, both in the backpack-ish title and boasting nature of the lyrics, albeit more laidback and cerebral than say, the ‘Rawkus’ era of the pre millennium. Tracks like ‘Handclap Shadack’ and ‘I am’ feel joined at the hip and really capture the celebration of the vernal season. As Moka states on the latter song ‘you can almost smell the grass at night on this one’ it brings those tangible bits of minutia to the listener’s soul. The ordinary observations of the writer become heralded exclamations on every verse throughout this whole album. Even without lyrics present on the instrumental title track the intention shines through clearly, presenting the underlying Tao of the entire project and more specifically the author himself. Whom else could in all seriousness present such a simple, somewhat silly romp as the song ‘Word Up’ in 2020 as Doctor Do Much? Who even titles a song ‘Word Up’ in this insta, tiktok era? Clearly an artist who arts for his own bemusement, pulling jelly beans out of the seams of his beats and lyrics at every turn, absent of regard for critics of such irregularities. This is the type of artist that will undoubtedly break the tipping point of popularity in the very near future due in part to the level of joy extracted from the seemingly mundane and also the sheer volume of quality releases amassed over the last two decades-plus. Though many of us are baffled at how Moka continues to do this I believe the mystery of it all should not be unveiled, it is a great part of what draws us fans and followers in to his world. Moka’s beats just become more gorgeous as the time marches on, as evident on tracks like ‘Wood’ with its unique 1 1/2 bar loop and the album’s end piece ‘For Keeps’ where ascending horns swirl opposite of descending organs, peppering the hooks and a short Wah-Wah guitar solo punctuates the final four bars of the track and instantly transports us to the outer reaches of the possible. As Moka states exuberantly ‘The timeless form is the forte!‘. Indeed it is. Harry Garrison - The Yakima Jazz Tribune.

BIOGRAPHY:
Daniel Denton is an iconic artist in Canadian hip-hop, based out of Vancouver, performing musical feats under any one of his mysterious aliases. Guised as Ron Contour, Flowtorch, ormost notably, as Moka
Only, his delivery is consistent and unmatched. He is an acclaimed underground champion, and a true storyteller with an unfathomable collection of stories to tell.

Moka works as a multi-faceted artist, and has been writing, producing, and creating relentlessly since the late nineties. As Co-founder of the collective rap group Swollen Members, his successes garnered him Three Juno Awards, Seven Platinum Plaques, and Seven MMVAs. He has also collaborated with legends such as MF Doom, J Dilla, and Grand Puba, and has toured internationally with artists such as Tanya Morgan and ILLA J, only to name a few.

In 2017 Moka delivered the self-produced album “Concert for One”, which earned a WCMA 2018 Rap Recording of the Year nomination, and came packed with stand-alone characteristic beats, The LP was later released as an instrumental record.

Following in suit, his 2019 follow up album “Patina”, showcased Moka’s signature smooth, jazzy, hip hop beats, married with lyrical storytelling, and was also later released as an instrumental record.

Moka Only’s much anticipated follow up album titled “It Can Do”, is set for release in the Spring of 2020 via URBNET.

The instrumental aspect of the new release is a clear nod to the future of where the artist is heading to, suggesting that instrumental composition is at the very heart of Moka’s being. “It Can Do” offers musically fragmented repetition that conjures an airy, wide-open, freedom, not often heard in contemporary rap.
